Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – An Italian-funded agricultural development and irrigation project is helping improve the living standards of 1,300 poor families in central Thua Thien Hue province.

The 2.6-million-EUR project is being carried out in Phu Vang district’s Vinh Ha, Vinh Thai and Phu Da communes from 2007-2009.

This year, the project will focus on Vinh Thai commune and upgrade pumping stations, build and dredge canals, construct a drainage system and strengthen the local dyke.

Earlier, in Vinh Ha commune, the project ran 44 farming training courses for more than 1,300 people, as well as built 150 pig pens and provided 300 farmers with loans to develop livestock breeding.

Under the project, irrigation has also been built and put into use to assist growth and drainage of 400ha of rice.

The Italian Foreign Ministry is putting 1.5 million EUR toward the project and Italian organisation GVC providing 414,600 EUR.
